Milestones Provides Boeing Building Solution

Problem: To contain all construction dust to avoid contamination or interrupting critical production time in the clean room area.

Solution: All construction was planned to be completed within the sealed fabric building allowing both containment and evacuation of all dust and debris.

Boeing is the world’s leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. In terms of sales, Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter. The company, with a 70-year heritage of leadership in commercial aviation, has nearly 12,000 commercial jetliners in service worldwide, which is roughly 75 percent of the world fleet. In the fall of 2005, Boeing needed to install a new piece of equipment inside one of their production buildings. Like many companies, Boeing has a need to control air flow and air quality since dust is a critical factor when working with composite material.

Working with Milestones, Boeing developed an excellent solution, using a 72' wide x 72' long (21.9m x 21.9m)arch building. “We chose a fabric building because of the clear-span space that is available while optimizing the overall floor space,” says Jon Larscheid, P.E., Major Projects & Construction Management, Boeing. The timelines for this project were very tight. Once the building was ordered, it was delivered in 43 days and installed during the one week shutdown over Christmas holidays, to eliminate any lost work hours in production. “The construction was very smooth, methodical and well constructed in a very short time period,” says Larscheid. “The building performed extremely well for its intended function.”

"The overall process from ordering to removal of the building was extremely timely. The Milestones team was very thorough and professional."

The building was required to be removed over one weekend in June. All materials needed to be transported outside the building so that manufacturing could begin on Monday morning, without missing a day of production. In addition to this, all of the equipment used to install and take down the building, needed to be propane or electric powered or else vented to the outside of the main building. “Both the installation and removal crews performed exceptionally,” says Larscheid. “They went well out of their way to ensure our aggressive schedule was maintained. They were very professional and worked beyond ‘normal’ work hours to ensure the installation and removal was complete and to our satisfaction.”

Boeing is very happy with how Milestones met their needs. “The overall process from ordering to removal of the building was extremely timely,” says Larscheid. “The Milestones team was very thorough and professional.” In fact, Boeing is considering using fabric building in future projects. “The fabric building portion of the project turned out to be the least of our worries in a very tight, schedule driven project. We wish we could rely on all our products and vendors to work this well.”

Working together, Milestones and Boeing were able to identify an effective solution which allowed production in their manufacturing plant to be uninterrupted. Milestones met the tight timelines for the project and is proud to be one of two suppliers to Boeing to receive an endorsement. Milestones can work with any company to develop diversified building solutions to meet any unique need.

The clear-span space and ease of installation were the

main reasons for choosing a fabric covered building.

Foster City Fire Department

Location: Foster City, CA
Building Size: 80' W x 73' L
Application: Temporary Fire Hall - Apparatus Bay Building

Fabric Covered Temporary and Portable Fire Hall

When Foster City officials needed a temporary building for two years during the construction of the new fire hall, project architect DES Architects & Engineers of Redwood City, CA recommended a 80 wide x 73 long fabric covered rounded peak building as the ideal solution.

Located along the San Francisco Bay in northern California, structural calculations for the rounded peak fabric building had to take into consideration the high winds common to the area. A custom building with a heavier galvanized steel frame was designed. The steel tubing used is 5” in diameter, a heavier gauge than what is commonly used for a building this size.

“The building is classified as an Essential Facility by the state of California with an Importance Factor of 1.5 which requires the building to be engineered to meet 110 mph 3-second wind gusts in a seismic zone four area,” says Gary Barnett, project manager, DES Architects & Engineers.

The mechanical components in the rounded peak fabric building include radiant heating and an extensive ventilation system to exhaust engine fumes. There are four bay entrances in the fabric building that are each 14' x 20' foot. Three of the electric bay doors are positioned at one end of the building to provide ample clearance for emergency vehicles. The fourth overhead door is at the 80 foot wide end of the building so the ladder fire engine can drive-through. Installation of the fabric covered rounded peak building was completed in just seven days.

Foster City Fire Department stores three front-line fire engines, two reserve units and a Battalion Chief command vehicle. A weight room and a storeroom were constructed inside the fabric structure as well.

When the construction of the new fire department is complete and the temporary structure is no longer needed, Foster City plans to sell the fabric building and relocate it to a new site.
